REM: You dream during rapid eye movement sleep. You usually have to go through a progression of light sleep, deep sleep and then rem.

All: Dreaming probably occurs during all stages of sleep. It is said that dreams that occur during REM sleep tend to be more vivid and visual, and non-REM dreams tend to be more vague, but I don't know that this has ever been subjected to rigorous scrutiny.
