A member asked:

What are the causes of lactose intolerance in people and why does it occur?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Lactase deficiency: Lactose intolerance is caused by a deficiency of the enzyme lactase normally found in the gut which is needed to digest milk sugar or lactose found in milk and many dairy products. The condition is usually genetic but may not appear until teens or early adulthood.
