Wax or eardrum: Several things can cause loss of hearing. Problems with the brain, the nerve, and the bones that conduct hearing usually don't come and go. Fluid behind the eardrum, retraction of the eardrum, or wax in the ear canal are causes of hearing that comes and goes.

Not good: Not a good sign. Possibly trivial like ear wax. Some things more serious. See an ENT doc for assessment.
