Excellent question. A first outbreak should be tested for sure, PCR to diagnose the infection and to distinguish HSV1 versus HSV2. The herpes blood tests should be used with caution: the results often are false (positive in people without infection, negative even in those with HSV2). The main thing is to avoid blood tests if there are no symptoms or known contact with an HSV2 infected partner.

Anyone who has had oral sex from an infected HSV-1 person. Genital herpes[HSV-2] is contracted from open lesions and asymptomatic HSV-1 partners during oral sex. Type 2 herpes is a STD disease.
