A member asked:

My wbc came back again as low 3.1 the neutrophils came back low @37 neutrophils absolute came back 1.1 what does this mean...are they related?

They are related.: The WBC is the total number of white cells, of which neutrophils are only one kind. The differential count gives percentages of each kind of wbc. So, 37% of 3100 total wbcs are neutrophils. 37% of 3100 is 1147, which is the absolute count. Normal is >1500. Infection risk begins with wbc.

See below...: Leukopenia (decreased number of wbc) with neutropenia (decreased number of neutrophils or granulocytes) may be seen in various clinical conditions including infections, congenital deficiencies, chemotherapy and some other medications, radiation, toxins, leukemia, aplastic anemia, autoimmune disease, bone marrow infiltration by cancer, etc. Consulting your doctor or a hematologist is recommended.
