To be honest, I'm surprised that you're surprised. The frequency of herpes zoster (shingles) rises with increasing age; several percent of people over age 60 have it at one time or another. The underlying cause is reduced strength of the immune system against the virus as people age. (Shingles is reactivation of chicken pox virus, which people carry for life after their childhood infection.)
