I have heard if you start treatment for syphilis soon enough before symptoms that you will never be contagious to others. is that true? how soon does someone become contagious after an exposure?

Yes, that's true. Syphilis cannot be transmitted until at least 10 days after catching it.

It is between 10-60 days- average 3 weeks before one becomes infectious
