Pap was normal but hpv+. zero sexual activity or intercourse for me until my wedding night 16 years ago. husband also never had intercourse but fooled around 8 years before we married. is it ever possible for an hpv test to reveal a false positive?

False positive HPV test results are very unlikely. Most new positive results on Pap smear indeed reflect distant past infection, as you are experiencing. Some HPV infections are unexplained. No harm is likely -- just follow your doctor's advice about possible follow-up Pap smear and HPV testing. Good luck.
