A member asked:

How far into the small bowel can be seen when having a colonoscopy? can it tell if there is a problem with ileum?

Endoscopic procedures very often examine the small intestine and do frequent biopsies, especially for the diagnosis of Celiac Disease.

Colonoscopist passes a long, flexible colonoscope through the anal canal, to reach the large intestine (colon). Assuming there are no obstructions or strictures, the colonoscope can reach right up to the caecum and terminal ileum. The terminal ileum is about 10 cm but biopsy that portion can make the diagnosis of different small bowel diseases such as Crohn or celiac disease, etc. Take care.
