The most common cause of sores at the corner of the mouth is angular cheilitis. You can google it for more information. It can accompany common colds, but usually there's no obvious cause. Some cases are due to local fungal (yeast) infection. And it could be herpes as well. Next time it happens, see your doctor for a PCR test for HSV to see if it's just a different form of cold sore.
