Acne is caused primarily by hormonal fluctuations. In Teens undergoing puberty, a high level of hormones causes overproduction of oil and increased levels of bacteria causing blackheads, whiteheads cysts and papules throughout the face. In Adults (over 25), there is also a high level of hormones, but this causes acne primarily over the cheeks and jawline. (no blackheads, whiteheads or cysts.)
