I'm not convinced that the cause of auditory or visual after image is known, but if it occurs shortly after the actual phone ringing or visual image,I don't think it's abnormal in contrast to auditory or visual hallucinations that occur independent of preceding stimuli. At least I hope so as I've experienced such episodes on a few occasions. I never discussed this with my neurology colleagues tho

Persistence of a continuing auditory signal may or may not be consistent with Palinoacusis, and may represent a lesion within the temporal-parietal area of the brain. This is similar in pattern to Palinopsia, the persistence of a visual image on looking away. Neither is necessarily a cause for concern but may be a symptom of a structural brain lesion. May need sorting out if persistent.
