Cancer happens when cells replicate abnormally and with no control so that the cells can then invade where they should not be. But, at its core, cancer is when cells replicate abnormally and without the usual controls that stop cell replication. One of the signs that it is a cancer is when there is invasion of tissues and when the cells appear at a distant site-this is called metastasis.
