"Safe" is relative in the first trimester (in particular) as we can't prove a negative and it is difficult to show harm except in the most obvious cases. It is best to avoid using anything non-essential. Also, just because something is "natural" doesn't mean it's safer. Your wife should discuss any concerns or problems with her obstetrician or midwife before taking or using anything.
