I suspect that you are a smoker, and that you are familiar with the menthol flavor and therefore recognise it. Smoking paralyzes the cilia which clean the lungs, leaving flavoured nicotine and tar deep in the lungs. These aromatic elements are breathed out and may be what you are experiencing.
