A member asked:

Why do treponemal igg antibodies (tpha, elisa etc) persist in serum forever even after treatment and cure? doesn't antibodies have a time period? after syphilis bacteria is dead, why are antibodies still produced in body which are detectable forever?

Dr. Jay Park answered

Once formed, IgG class antibody remains at low level life long. In contrast, IgM class antibody fades away in short period. Therefore, titers of RPR or VDRL is used to determine the status of syphilis infection.
