A member asked:

Do we have difficulty swallowing, if the hyoid bone is broken or displaced?

It is very rare to suffer a broken hyoid bone unless you are strangulated or you get a direct blow to that horseshoe bone during an accident. This bone does not participate fully in the swallowing mechanism but your swallowing may be impaired with a broken hyoid because the muscles for voluntary swallowing do attach to this bone. Take care.
