A member asked:

Should i be worried about watery oatmeal-like diarrhea that is orange/red, with navel area pain? after evacuating the normal bm, the color changed over 12hrs. until orange-not a pale beige as i usually see. no fever / first time occurrence?

Bloody bowel movements should be evaluated especially in age groups over 50 years old. I typically recommend colon cancer screening with a colonoscopy starting at age 45 for patients who have an average risk for colon cancer. Other causes of GI bleeding include hemorrhoids, anal fissures, diverticulosis and diverticulitis, gastric ulcers, cancer, and arteriovenous malformations.

If it appears that the bowel movement may have blood in it, you should have it evaluated immediately. It is never normal to have gastrointestinal bleeding. You should see your doctor for a stool test even if the stools return to normal promptly. do not ignore this. Good luck.
