A member asked:

For the last few months ive noticed that the palms of my hands smell like maple syrup. its only sometimes and usually only in the evening. ive noticed it maybe a dozen times. i tested my blood sugar levels and they are normal. what could it be?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Maple syrup urine disease can be present in infants and children as autosomal recessive inherited disease. Deficiency in the activity of the branched chain alpha keto acid dehydrogenase complex can rarely diagnosed in adults when they develop same disease by mutation in the enzyme. Please see your doctor for diagnosis, diet, and genetic counseling. Hope it helps.
