It depends on the severity but, in general, ulcerative colitis tends to have more systemic complications whereas diverticulitis has mostly local complications. But, a really severe case of diverticulitis may be worse than a mild case of ulcerative colitis so severity affects the prognosis. Either way, a GI doctor can treat both of these conditions. Either of these diseases can be mild, or can be severe enough that it could require emergency surgery. They are completely separate illnesses and can’t really be compared. If you suspect you have either one, you should see your primary doctor or a gastroenterologist. Good luck.
