Hyperventilation ( for example from extreme anxiety) can cause passing out as oxygen is exhaled and carbon di oxide accumulates, causing less o2 going to brain.

If the described shortness of breath was indeed an episode of hyperventilation, then the "passing out" would have been a secondary syncopal episode. Do confer with your doctor if this continues.
