My menstrual cycle is consistently 40-45 days. its been like this for years. is this necessarily abnormal or could it just be typical for me?

If it has been that way for years it may well be the pattern your body has set. Some only have 3-4 menses/yr or have irregular patterns. It is not the "average" pattern 26-35 day pattern many will have. I would not embrace the idea something is wrong, just different. It may make conceiving hard to plan for in your future, but women with this pattern have kids too.
