A member asked:

I was diagnosed with degenerative disc disease (l3-l4) 3 years ago and been managing chronic lower back pain with naproxen. last two weeks it has flared up and is bothersome when sitting for a short period of time. is this a cause for concern?

Degenerative disks can rupture or lead to spinal stenosis. Worrisome symptoms would be severe back pain which may prevent you from sleeping, radiation of pain to the buttocks& down the leg,leg pains on walking and very concerning would be muscle weakness & problems controlling bladder and bowels. A neurologist or neurosurgeon would be best to evaluate & advise you. Epidural steroids,PT may help

Over time, there are symptomatic fluctuations and some ongoing progression. Quite often, some brief physical therapy allows stabilization. If a discogenic protrusion or herniation eventuates, an epidural steroid injection may be beneficial. Some patients do well with McKenzie Back Exercises, and others find sacroiliac support belts to relieve symptoms.
