You should pose that question to the doc. Although you may be 16/18 negative there are many other strains that can trigger genital cancer. A Pap samples only a small sample of the cells. Colposcopy permits a more thorough evaluation.

HPV 16/18 are simply the most common and most aggressive HPV types associated with cervical cancer. There are at least 10 others. Even with a negative pap, a persistently positive HPV over at least a year, even if not16/18, is an indication for colposcopy. Past history, which is not provided, also affects the recommendation.
