Urethritis is urethra inflammation and is classified as gonococcal (caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae) or nongonococcal (commonly caused by Chlamydia trachomatis, Mycoplasma genitalium, or Trichomonas vaginalis). 50% of nongonococcal cases have no clear cause. HSV, adenovirus, and H. influenzae are rare causes of urethritis. Empiric treatment includes ceftriaxone and azithromycin (or doxyxycline).
