Beta-blockers (such as metoprolol, propanolol) should not be withdrawn abruptly but tapered to avoid acute tachycardia, hypertension, and cardiovascular ischemia, which causes worsening chest pain, arrhythmias, and sometimes heart attacks. Beta-blockers increase beta receptor sensitivity and decreased sympathetic nervous system response, and platelets can clump to epinephrine and thrombin
