How long does salmonella bacteria live on surfaces and can you get sick if you were to touch a surface with salmonella on it and then put your hand in your mouth?

This is extremely unlikely. Conceivably such a contact could risk a salmonella infection, if someone with salmonella had contaminated the surface you contacted with his or her feces. Otherwise there is little or no risk: almost all salmonella infections are acquried by ingestion of large amounts of bacteria in contaminated food.
