A member asked:

Why is bariatric surgery safe... but elective surgery is not?... i was told by my pcp that if i needed back surgery... i would have to have bariatric surgery first so that i would qualify for the elective surgery... that seems absolutely insane to me?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Bariatric surgery is for weight loss in the morbidly obese when other methods have failed. Any surgery can have complications. It is elective surgery (planned). Back surgery is for other reasons and doc might mean that if you are obese chances of complications are high so if weight is lost after bariatric surgery back surgery might become safer. Have him explain so you can understand
