If your fasting glycemia (serum glucose level or blood sugar) has been above 140 in the last couple months, that HbA1c is a lab error. However, if the glycemia has only been high for a couple days, the current HbA1C may not be abnormal yet because HbA1c is the average glycemia for 3 months. You should check glycemia at 2 hours post meal. If both pre and post numbers are high, DM is present.
