How reliable is a ddimer for pe? im having severe back pain with pressure in my chest, top of stomach & trouble getting a deep breath. ekg, chest xray & ddimer done. ddimer seemed to only take 30 minutes was negative. told i am low risk to start?

A normal D-dimer can be used to rule out pulmonary embolism (PE) in patients with a low or intermediate probability of PE.

A negative D-dimer in a low risk person rules out PE. A positive D-dimer is not diagnostic of PE. A negative result is more reliable.
