Once had a coughing fit on the underground train but only when sitting down, when standing i was fine, but sitting again triggered a coughing attack. is there link between sitting and standing/more dusty lower down in train carriage?

That could be one possibility. Another explanation could be some acid reflux provoked by sitting in a lower position.
