Multiple possibiliti: Blood flow could be a cause as well and a nerve issues. Nerves from the back and lower extremities can do this and, even a low vitamin d level can cause numbness in some people. Seeing a doctor about this would be good.

Neuroma: If the numbness is between the toes (typically between the 3rd and 4th), this could be a morton's neuroma. The nerve becomes enlarged and scarred, causing burning, shooting pain, numbness, or pins and needles. It could also be a result of the exercise shoe laces being too tight.

Neuropathy: Numbness of the toes is called peripheral neuropathy and can be caused by many things including diabetes, certain medication, vitamin deficiency, trauma and alcohol. I would see my primary care doctor and get my blood draw to rule out diabetes and then see a podiatrist.

Numb toes: Numbness in toes can be from neuromas or poor circulation to the toes. The nerve problem can also be from your lower back or even a nerve impingement in your ankle called tarsal tunnel syndrome or sinus tarsi syndrome. Take some vitamin b complex. Wear wider more comfortable shoes with orthotics. See your podiatrist. There are pills that can be taken such as Lyrica (pregabalin) or Neurontin for numbness.

I agree with....: Dr. Tseng's answer. There are also a number of "medical food" supplements that can be tried too, like metanx, neuremedy and neurvasia that will have much fewer (if any) side effects compared the other medications already listed.
