A member asked:

When ever we go visiting somewhere my 3 months old daughter has her fists flinched and never opens them even when she feeds to satisfaction. what is the cause? also she bites on her lower lip and uses her touge to rub on her gum. she bites my nipple?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

The palmar reflex, or fist clenching is a normal part of the developing infant's nervous system. By 3-4 months they sometimes begin to relax the fist more, but 4-5 months is when it is open more naturally. I don't view any of the cited behaviors as either unusual or bad.
