My 17 month old occasionally stiffens up and his eyes are wide open sometimes clenching his mouth and fist. it always seems to happen when he is doing something active (reaching for something, or eating)

This : This is something that warrants immediate evaluation. This definitely sounds like seizure activity. A more detailed history needs to be obtained, as well as a test called an eeg to look for clues as to why this is occurring. Please see your doctor asap.
