Floating ribs : The last 2 ribs are called floating ribs; they originate from the thoracic spine, but do not attach to the sternum/rib cage as the 10 other ribs above them do. Since one end of these ribs is "floating" and not attached to any other bone or cartilage, they may be felt a moveable lumps underneath the rib cage.
