Diverticulosis is the condition of having multiple pouches (colonic diverticula = outpockets of the colonic mucosa and submucosa through weaknesses of muscle layers in the colon wall) in the colon (large intestine). This condition is very common in American adults, especially after the middle ages. They are harmless unless complicated with bleeding, infection or perforation.

Diverticulosis usually occurs in the sigmoid colon in the left lower quadrant of your abdomen and is characterized by small pockets in the bowel wall and thickening of the muscular layer in the wall of the colon.
