Hyperthyroidism, after treated with medications, radioactive iodine or partial thyroidectomy, can go to remission, i.e. normal thyroid function (euthyroid), without further treatment but a high percentage of cases will become hypothyroidism later. In contrast, hypothyroidism, once developed, will not go to remission and thyroid replacement therapy is required with gradually increased dose.
