Inks in general in the quantities found in a pen are minimally toxic. They may result in an mildly upset stomach and discoloration of stool. No other symptoms or problems are typically found with ingestion of the tiny amounts of ink found in a pen.

The ink may be non toxic, but the plastic and metal pieces of the pen may cause breathing problems if lodged in the airway. Examine the pen for any missing pieces. Observe the baby closely and if coughing or fever occur, please see your pediatrician. The gel pen ink is usually no toxic in small quantities.
