Did your ophthalmologist find any obvious causes of this sudden increase in refractive error such as change in cornea shape, wet macular edema? If not it may be due to rather abrupt loss of some elasticity of the lens of your eyes. Your ophthalmologist, who examined you, can explain this rather sudden worsening of your nearsightedness.

The most common causes of a rapid hyperopic shift in refractive error (going from +2.50 to +4.00 in a month) are uncontrolled blood sugar (usually has to go over 300 to cause this), elevation of the retina from fluid (easily ruled out by an eye examination), and possibly cataract, though cataract more commonly causes a nearsighted shift in refractive error (+4.00 to +2.50).
