Pushing down on your tongue with a tongue depressor activates several nervous pathways that elevate the palate (raise the roof of the mouth), which, when normal, is both brisk and symmetrical. This one simple test verifies function of several afferent (incoming) and efferent (outgoing) cranial nerves simultaneously. Palate elevation blocks connection with nasal cavity during swallowing and speech.
