What old books have you been reading? Dementia praecox (Latin "premature dementia", "precocious madness") was a hopelessly vague term, long since abandoned. It was replaced by "schizophrenia," which has a specific meaning. "Insanity" is no longer a medical term; it's a legal term. (Old synonym: "Feeble-minded") It referred broadly to any kind of developmental disorder and also neurosyphilis.
