Recent studies have shown that cleaning and irrigating a wound with tap water by itself reduces the rate of infection as much as sterile water. The idea is that the mechanical motion removes the dirt, debris, and contaminants from the wound. The same idea goes for soaps so long as it does not irritate the wound. Furthermore, topical antibiotics like Neosporin may slowly delay wound healing.
