It starts immediately but will likely take years to detect or do real damage. Assuming the reading was taken properly with an accurate device. The first VA studied required patients to have an outpatient diastolic BP of 115-120 for six months on no meds. Mo one developed heart or kidney damage in that time All men. The first thing to do is to move to the DASH diet.
