In addition to getting tested for prediabetes or actual diabetes with fasting or postprandial blood sugar level and a HgbA1c, train yourself to avoid concentrated sweets like candy, pastry, syrups, etc and reduce intake of starches like bread, pasta, rice. This will get more mileage out of your pancreas and insulin secreting ablility as time goes on. Maintain ideal weight and regular exercise.

I have the same problem, my father and younger brother were and are diabetic. Since they had a high intake of sugar and poor diet, as well as being overweight, that contributed to their being a diabetic, one insulin dependent and the other to medication. Knowing some of the causes, one can have a diet low on sugars, and exercise as much as can. See a nutritionist for a proper diet, and a trainer

The answer to this depends on whether those in your family have Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes. I agree with the other doctors’ answers for Type 2 which is probably what your family has if developed as adults. However, type 1 is genetic and if that is what they have, you should be tested, but you may not be able to prevent developing this with those measures. Please discuss with your doctor.
