I do not know or have I ever heard of a "hook effect" and lab testing discuss with the lab doing the test.

Hook effect is a laboratory term. It implies that very high levels sometime give a low result. However, the laboratories know about it and will dilute the specimen and retest to get an accurate level. HCG is one of the tests subject to hook effect. For example a woman with cancer of placental tissue may have high values that in initial testing look low, still elevated, but lower than actual.
