I imagine the medication prescribed was to help control your blood pressure. I assume you have a diagnosis of hypertension by now. You should also look at dietary changes. If your blood pressure does not improve on medication, tests for kidney function and aldosterone/renin ratio may be useful.

If hypertension was just recently diagnosed, secondary hypertension should be ruled out at your age. Preliminary work-up for secondary hypertension include urinalysis, renal panel blood test and renal ultrasound with duplex. However, if you have history of chronic hypertension with normal blood and urine test in the past, blood pressure med regimen needs to be adjusted to keep BP less than 130/80.
