The size of a tumor does not necessarily determine whether treatment is effective. Depending on timing, the size could be small one day, and rapidly progress in growth another day. Also what can appear small on the surface, like melanoma, may be actually very deep, malignant, and already metastasize. This is why we use Tumor, node, metastasis (TNM) Staging in the U.S.
