The vaginal flora contain many types of bacteria considered "good" & "bad". The good bacteria (i.e. Lactobacillus species) prevent overgrowth of the bacteria that cause malodorous discharge (i.e. Gardnerella). So simply identifying Gardnerella on a swab of normal appearing discharge is totally normal. Additionally, your vulvar pain may not have anything to do with an infectious organism.

Pain in vulva is not caused by a discharge, Pl have a repeat testing if you have no discharge, you can try Ibuprofen for a few days and if not better see a Gyn.
