You probably have strained muscle(s) in the upper chest and the gel could be a NSAID gel (diclofenac) or local anesthetic (lidocaine gel or alike). The gel may not be strong enough. You can try ibuprofen or advil OTC 200 mg, x 2-3 tablets every 6-8 hours with some foods for a couple days if you do not have stomach or kidney problem. Besides NSAID pill, apply warm compress may be helpful.
