The sheath that normal surrounds the nerves is not being made properly or disappearing. It is a broad term. For more details I would invest some $ and go to uptodate.com and read about all of the demyelinating diseases then discuss with your Drs. Some are inherited and there are genetic tests for them. Discuss with your Dr who knows you and your family history.

This is a general term to describe a disorder affecting the myelin covering (insulation) of the nerves in the central nervous system. The classic disease is Multiple Sclerosis, but many other causes are well known. Have you or family members been labeled or diagnosed with a "demyelinating disease"?
